It seems nearly every financial publication released today has the term “bubble” in it somewhere. Many of us know it’s a bad thing, but what does it really mean and how do they happen? Do they truly have an effect on the average consumer? Hopefully we can clear up the confusion of what an economic bubble is and determine if we can know when one is occurring.

Outlook for Canadian Stocks in 2010 How well will the Canadian stock market do in 2010? If the U.S. sneezes again, will Canada catch another cold? If there is any fallout or a double-dip U.S. recession owing to defaults on payment-option ARM mortgages, will it send global markets into another fiscal tailspin as we saw in...... -
Selling In May Was A Good Idea, Sell Again In September Back in the beginning of May, I talked about an investment phenomenon that showed selling your stock holdings in May and then buying them back in November yielded better returns than just holding them through those months. Part of the reason is due to investors selling to go on vacation.......
I was reading up on what’s new in the mortgage markets and the economy over the weekend, and one piece of reporting caught my eye because it seemed like it couldn’t possibly be true. It was talking about how the Obama administration is considering making a move later this month where Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would be told to forgive a portion of the mortgage debt of millions of underwater homeowners. From Reuters:

One in Six Underwater Homeowners Can't Refinance at Historically Low Mortgage Rates Seems Mr. Bernanke and The Federal Reserve are hellbent on lowering mortgage lending rates after lowering short term rates to zero this week. Problem is, 1 in 6 homeowners are underwater (owing more than the home is worth) on their mortgage, and will not have a chance to refinance to...... -
Should We Get Rid Of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? That’s what the Mortgage Banker’s Association (MBA) said earlier this week. The MBA is a trade-group for companies involved in the home-financing industry. With over 3,000 member companies employing 350,000 professionals, it’s no surprise they carry some clout in Washington. Their proposal suggests that instead of two government sponsored entities......
When The Obama Health Care law passed this year few people actually knew what was fully contained within the bill’s thousands of pages. Only now after the law has been passed are we finding out the details about some of the provisions within the law that could affect us. A lot of people aren’t happy about what they’re finding.
One of the provisions that has been almost universally spurned by Republicans and Democrats alike is a new requirement that could affect nearly 38 million businesses, including many entrepreneurs and freelancers like myself. The requirement? They must all file tax forms for every vendor that sells them more than $600 in goods.

Fair Tax: The Pros and Cons First of all let's be clear, with a name like "fair tax" it's difficult to argue against it. "Fair tax" is a term like "Change we can believe in." What does it really mean? Nothing. Instead think of the Fair Tax as a tax on consumerism (Consumer Tax). It is......
At the end of the 2010 there will be a tax increase for all taxpayers, if something isn’t done. Back in 2001 the Bush administration helped to get an across the board tax cut passed that effectively lowered the marginal tax rates for all people paying taxes. (If you didn’t pay taxes, it doesn’t matter too much does it?). Now those cuts are expiring and on January 1st, 2011 the new marginal tax rates will go into effect unless extended by legislation.

Over the last year or so we’ve had a lot of talk on this site about the homebuyer tax credit. It helped to spur activity in the real estate markets, bringing more first time homebuyers into the market than we’ve seen for a long time. It also brought in a lot of current homeowners when the credit was extended to include people who already own a home. We watched last month as there was a flurry of activity as the deadline loomed for people to put in a purchase agreement for a house in order to beat the clock. My brother was one of those people who made their home purchase on the last day possible!

Earlier this week President Obama spoke with seniors at a town hall meeting in regards to the Medicare Part D prescription benefit, and talked about how many of those seniors would be receiving a $250 check in the mail as a result of the health care reform passed earlier this year. Today I thought I would explain a bit more about that rebate check being sent out, who will get it, and when they can expect it.
What is the Medicare Doughnut Hole?

Fresh off of a $787 billion stimulus package passed in February of 2009, congressional Democrats are now beginning to talk about passing a second, more modest stimulus package sometime within the next few months – aimed at easing the unemployment crisis. From Reuters:
Congressional Democrats’ push for another U.S. stimulus package got a boost on Tuesday from an analysis that found their earlier effort had blunted the impact of the worst economic downturn in 80 years.

Obama Administration Urges Congress To Pass Another $200 Billion Stimulus Package
As the effects of the $787 billion stimulus package of last year begin to wear off, the Obama administration is now looking at the option of passing yet another “limited” stimulus package to help dig the economy “out of a deep valley”. Without it they fear that the slow gains our economy has made this year could be lost. The Financial Times explains:
