It seems nearly every financial publication released today has the term “bubble” in it somewhere. Many of us know it’s a bad thing, but what does it really mean and how do they happen? Do they truly have an effect on the average consumer? Hopefully we can clear up the confusion of what an economic bubble is and determine if we can know when one is occurring.

Now before we get too far into this, let me say up front that I think education is important. For many careers you can’t get very far if you don’t have a degree. Should You Pay for Your Child's College Education? Paying for college for yourself or for a child can drop you into debt faster than many other things. Paying for our kid’s college has been near the top of our personal finance goals list for a long time. There are a number of reasons I personally feel strongly about this goal:
- I know what it’s like to have school loans (both my wife and I had them).
- I have a Biblical perspective on debt and I want my kids to have a debt free start when they graduate.
- My wife and I want our kids to focus on school when they’re in school. I don’t have any problems with them having a part-time job, but my preference would be for them to go to school full-time and not have to work full-time.

My son just turned 5 years old in July. He is a tall for his age, loves soccer and can’t wait for September to start school. While he is growing up (he doesn’t want to be called a kid anymore but a boy!), I am doing my best to transmit to him as much financial knowledge as I can so he doesn’t have to learn his money lessons the hard way.

Nobody ever said that attending college was going to be easy. In fact, with the downward spiral of the recent economy putting the crunch on public services across the board, schools are placing more and more of the burden of paying for higher education on the shoulders of students. Even in cases like California, where colleges and universities face caps on the percentage that tuition can be raised each year, schools are finding ways to supplement the money they are losing from the state by implementing outlandish fees (what exactly does a student union do that they need a hundred bucks from every student, every semester?). That said, it is now more important than ever to take advantage of the opportunities available to students looking to save money on their secondary education.

I once wrote (well, more than once) an article that got some negative criticism. The article was called How To Write A Check And Other Checkbook Basics. I found out that a lot of people graduating high school didn’t know how to write a check, so I wrote an article on the topic. There was some criticism that the post was so basic that it was useless. But, the truth is so many teens don’t know how to write a check. Our financial education for young people needs to start with some very basic lessons.

How Soon Is Too Soon To Teach A Kid About Money?
While more knowledgeable educators and child psychologists would love to quibble over the finite details of this question, my response is less nuanced – as soon as possible between the ages of 3 and 4.
Since it is hard to predict when your kids might “get it” I think it would be wise to have a system in place for when the child does.
