When The Obama Health Care law passed this year few people actually knew what was fully contained within the bill’s thousands of pages. Only now after the law has been passed are we finding out the details about some of the provisions within the law that could affect us. A lot of people aren’t happy about what they’re finding.
One of the provisions that has been almost universally spurned by Republicans and Democrats alike is a new requirement that could affect nearly 38 million businesses, including many entrepreneurs and freelancers like myself. The requirement? They must all file tax forms for every vendor that sells them more than $600 in goods.

This past March President Obama signed H.R.3590 “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” into law after it passed both houses of Congress. It was hailed by his administration as being a breakthrough piece of legislation that would provide health care coverage to all Americans.
While more people will be covered by the law, it does come with it’s costs – with the biggest one being an increased tax bill for many people. While it may be a while before this plan and it’s taxes actually take effect, it’s a good idea to know what you’re in for in the coming years. (It should be noted that the law also has tax breaks to help both individuals and small businesses pay for insurance.)

Earlier this week President Obama spoke with seniors at a town hall meeting in regards to the Medicare Part D prescription benefit, and talked about how many of those seniors would be receiving a $250 check in the mail as a result of the health care reform passed earlier this year. Paying for insurance is something I believe everyone should do because it transfers the monetary risk of a catastrophic event from you the insured, to the insurance company. The insurance company banks on the fact that most people aren’t going to have a major event in any given period, and because of the fact that most people don’t, insurance companies end up bringing in a lot of money. (Yes, there’s a reason why many of the huge buildings in metropolitan centers are owned by insurance companies)

Over the past few months my employers have been scrambling to try and manage the company’s health care costs in light of pending increases in premiums both for the company, and for employees. With all the uncertainty with pending health care legislation, increased taxes and other concerns the company has put off making any huge decisions on health care this year, and we’re choosing to continue our coverage, but with a large increase in premiums. Next year the company may be moving to a Health Savings Account (HSA) system to help manage costs. This will mean higher deductibles, which for some people will mean paying more out of pocket. We’ll see how it works out.
