Any time I blog about insurance, I get the sense that it makes most readers’ skins crawl! It’s not a fun topic to consider because usually when you’re collecting it, something bad has happened – and most people don’t like to consider the negatives of life.
But, in order to be the most prepared financially, we have to cover all topics from a personal finance standpoint. So bear with me as we tackle an often confusing, often misunderstood topic – disability insurance.

Paying for insurance is something I believe everyone should do because it transfers the monetary risk of a catastrophic event from you the insured, to the insurance company. The insurance company banks on the fact that most people aren’t going to have a major event in any given period, and because of the fact that most people don’t, insurance companies end up bringing in a lot of money. (Yes, there’s a reason why many of the huge buildings in metropolitan centers are owned by insurance companies)

About 2 weeks ago President Barack Obama signed a measure to extend the Cobra health care benefit subsidy for workers who have been terminated from their jobs. Under the new measure workers terminated from January 1st through Feb. 28th, 2010 would eligible to receive the subsidy to help pay for their health care benefits for up to 15 months, 6 months longer than was passed in the stimulus bill last February. Previously eligibility for the subsidy would have only run through 12/31/2009.
