Linking Part 1: Building people, building links.
For a start. I will issue this statement with a little bit of verve. THERE IS NOT A THING AS BEST PRACTICE in link building!
Now, that that has been set straight, let’s proceed to the topic at hand, Link Building part 1: Building people, building links.
As a golden rule to link building: links reflect value on the web. With this in mind. Linking is like a signal to the web about you and the value you are giving. Or the value of what you have to offer. The more valuable you have, and the more relevant it is to others, the more link you will get.
Link building is not about ranking nor it is about search engines, it is particularly about people. People who are looking for something they need. People who are searching for answers to their everyday questions. Sure, links are also for search engines and for page ranking, but the more you focus on these two, the more you will find it difficult to build your link. Develop you linking with people in mind. The number one mistake of a newbie is always be blinded by the search engines and the SEO thing. Don’t be counted as an statistics.
There are endless potential for links in the internet. As of this article, there are a little under a billion websites today. There is no sign on the horizon that this is going to taper off. And each of this hundreds of million web pages are potential links. It is literally everywhere you turn. The challenge you will face is not where do I get link but, what kind of link I am suppose to get. Quality link, quality link. Get that across and sink it in.
Now, how do it get them, or where do i get them? How do I start? The following are some of the places where it will be good for you to start building your link.
1. Start with directories. This is the simpliest way to start to get a link. I would label this step one or the basic step. Just visit at least 5 directories and have your site submitted to them. Although I have mentioned that you don’t have to submit your site to directories in my previous article on best-practices-for-doing-search-engine-optimization. The reason for that is simple. I was not talking of starting to build a link. I was talking about SEO in general.
2. Next, you need to build your community. Build your contacts by going to Blogs and Forums of the similar persuasion as yours. Again, think about the people not the linking itself. Interact with others of the same mind as you. Talk to site owners, share what you have in mind by posting and commenting. This way, you will build yourself a reputation that is unquestionable in your kind of expertise. And, as you build yourself, you also build your links along the way. You start to have friends across the internet who will be helpful for you in the future as you pursue a more aggressive marketing strategy for a bigger project.
Whew, That was quick. That’s it for today. There are still more venues you can go to for link building. I will discuss them in part 2.
